Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Reviewed by Emily Terasa (Library Staff)

Scarlett and her sister Tella have never left the small island where they live, with their cruel father. While Scarlett plans to escape the island through an arranged marriage, Tella decides it is time to leave now. Scarlett has always dreamed of seeing Caraval, a once-a-year performance that involves audience participation. When she gets invited to Caraval, she doesn’t think she will go, but Tella has other ideas, and with a mysterious sailor, she forces Scarlett to go to the show. When Tella disappears at the hands of the organizer of Caraval, Legend, Scarlett has to team up with the sailor and follow the clues in order to win Caraval and find her sister.

This book was full of magic, love, heartbreak, and adventure. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, and I was pleasantly surprised. The land where Caraval is taking place is full of wonder and magic, almost Wonderland like. I could see this book making a visually stunning movie. Enjoy this book, and remember, it’s only a game.
