Garvey’s Choice by Nikki Grimes

Reviewed by Jane Oliver-Purton (Library Staff)

Garvey is a kid whose dad thinks he should play football. But sports are definitely Not. His.Thing. Garvey doesn’t know yet what his thing is, but best friend, Joe, and later, Manny, are willing and able to help him find it. Things change when Garvey tries out for chorus, and he thinks just maybe he has found his sport. This slim volume is similar in heart and voice to Grimes’ Words with Wings. Written in easy to read Tanka poems, this slim volume is a perfect read for any kid who knows what it’s like to be “different”.
