This biography of beloved children’s book author E.B. White (Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little) is a delight from start to finish. Melissa Sweet approached the task of sharing White’s story very visually; the biography is a scrapbook of mixed media including drawings, photographs, typed poems, letters, newspaper clippings, handwritten drafts of book pages, and other primary source documents as well as Sweet’s distinctive artwork. Sweet’s colorful, textured art style meshes wonderfully with the hope and earnestness ever-present in the life of E.B. White.
I especially loved hearing about White’s attitude toward writing for children. He believed “Anyone who writes down to children is simply wasting his time. You have to write up, not down. Children are demanding. They are the most attentive, curious, eager, observant, sensitive, quick, and generally congenial readers on earth.” (130)
Overall, an inspiring biography for young writers and human beings alike.
