My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016)

I only own five DVDs, and one of them is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It is one of the few movies I can watch over and over again. So of course I was looking forward to seeing My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. I was well aware, going into the theater, that sequels rarely measure up to the quality of the originals. (I’m looking at you, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.) But My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 delivers almost as many laughs–and just as many warm fuzzies–as the original.

The story takes place eighteen years after the events of the first movie. Toula Portokalos Miller (Nia Vardalos) is now being pulled in every direction by her overbearing parents, needy relatives, distant husband (John Corbett), and teenage daughter. But Toula really takes a backseat in this movie, as we find out that her parents, due to a clerical error, were never actually married. Drama predictably ensues as the extended Portokalos family prepares for a blowout wedding for the elderly couple.

The characters really make the Big Fat Greek Wedding movies, and they are played to perfection again in this sequel. Toula’s father (Michael Constantine) is still trying to prove that the Greeks invented everything, while her mother (Lainie Kazan) is still cracking wise at his expense. Her aunt Voula steals the show with one-liners (“Your grandparents are living in sin.”), and her cousins squabble hilariously. Toula’s daughter’s storyline is not too intriguing or funny, but she rounds out the generational humor nicely.
