The Way to the Zoo by John Burningham

Reviewed by Jane Oliver-Purton (Library Staff)

John Burningham has long been one of my favorite authors for young children. Twenty-five years ago, my children loved Mr. Gumpy’s Outing, which is still a favorite among children today. The Way to the Zoo is a new book I adore. Sylvie discovers a door in her room and, upon investigation, finds it leads to a zoo. Each night Sylvie takes one animal (or more!) to her room for the night, returning them to the zoo before she goes to school each morning. One day, though, Sylvie forgets to close her door. The simple sentences and winsome pictures make this one of those books that begs to be read and discussed over and over.
